Appling Middle School Attendance Policy

  • Please submit a dated written excuse to the office or school counselor whenever you are absent. A parent can write an excuse for three (3) days only per semester.

Example of how to write your excuse:

To Whom It May Concern,

Please excuse Sue Lawrence absence/tardy on September 3, 2016 due to ________.

  • Please submit your written excuse within three (3) days of returning to school. Failure to present an excuse within (3) days will result in an unexcused absence.
  • Parents may submit written excuses for three (3) days only per semester.
  • After missing 7 unexcused days from school you will be referred to the Truancy Officer and School Social Worker for attendance.
  • If you have 10 or more unexcused absences per school year, you may be placed on the retention list for review for promotion.
  • Court-related penalties for excessive unexcused absences may include subjecting the parent(s), guardian(s), or other person(s) to criminal misdemeanor charges. Upon conviction thereof, parent(s), guardian(s), or other person(s) may be subject to a fine not to exceed $100.00 or imprisonment not to exceed 30 days, or both, at the discretion of the court having jurisdiction.

Tardiness

You are late after 9:05 a.m. Please submit a written excuse signed by a parent if you report to school after 9:05 a.m.

  • Tardy 1: Verbal warning
  • Tardy 2: Principal's letter to parent (must be signed and returned within 24 hours to the office)
  • Tardy 3: Conference with Parent & Letter to parents
  • Tardy 4: One (1) day of Principal's Detention which will be served one (1) hour after school. Failure to do so will result in an additional day in ISS and/or OSS.
  • Tardy 5: Same as above
  • Tardy 6: Loss of privileges of attending extracurricular activities.
  • Tardy 7: Referral to School Social Worker.
